SEO & AEO
SEO vs AEO: what's the difference?
SEO ranks your pages in search results. AEO gets your content cited directly inside AI-generated answers. Both matter, and they aren't the same discipline.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of structuring a page so it ranks well in traditional search results: Google, Bing, the ten blue links. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is newer and narrower. It's the practice of structuring content so an AI tool, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Claude, can read it, extract a direct answer, and cite your site as the source, often without the reader ever clicking through.
The two share a foundation. A site that's slow, poorly structured, or blocked from crawlers fails at both. But past that shared floor, they optimize for different outcomes: SEO for a ranking position and a click, AEO for being the thing an AI model decides to quote.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page for a search query | Be the answer an AI tool gives, cited or paraphrased |
| Success metric | Ranking position, organic traffic, click-through rate | Citation frequency, inclusion in AI-generated answers |
| Primary surface | Google, Bing search results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude |
| Key tactics | Keywords, backlinks, Core Web Vitals, crawl health | Structured data, answer-first content, clear citable claims |
What is AEO?
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews can parse it, extract a clear answer, and cite your site as the source. It's optimization for being read by a model, not just a search index.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO gets a page ranked so a person clicks through and reads it. AEO gets the content itself pulled into an AI-generated answer, sometimes without a click at all. SEO rewards keyword relevance and backlinks. AEO rewards content that's easy for a model to extract cleanly: a direct answer up front, structured data confirming what the page is about, and claims specific enough to be worth quoting.
Why does AEO matter now?
A growing share of research and buying decisions start in an AI tool instead of a search bar. If your content only targets classic SEO signals, it can rank well in search while being invisible inside the answers people are increasingly asking for first. AEO is how you stay present in both.
What actually moves the needle for AEO?
Four things in practice: structured data (schema.org markup that tells a crawler exactly what the content is), answer-first writing (the first sentence of a section should stand alone as a complete, quotable answer), topical authority (depth on a subject across multiple pages, not one isolated article), and citability (specific, defensible claims rather than vague marketing language that gives a model nothing concrete to quote).
Does AEO replace SEO, or work alongside it?
Alongside. The technical foundation, crawlability, page speed, clean structured data, is identical for both. AEO doesn't replace that work, it extends it with a second layer aimed at how AI tools parse and cite content rather than how they rank it.
This is the standard our own SEO & AEO service is built to. If your site ranks but never gets cited, or vice versa, that's usually a specific, fixable gap.
